The Heart of the Matter

CLASS FULL

Compassion is at the heart of all great portraiture. Close observation of our model's structure, coloring, values, and posture engenders compassion and is central to the creation of a sympathetic portrait.

The goal in this workshop is to distill the model's complexities into a simply expressed harmonious construction. Ellen will discuss how she develops an understanding of color and value relationships, how she makes her pastel stick selections, how she moves across the form with color. It is not her intention to lead others to create portraits that look like hers, therefore, she will work with each student one-on-one. There will be one model in a clothed pose for the full day. Students will begin their investigations with a very simple black and white thumbnail sketch, with an emphasis on the grand construction of abstract shapes, in a small sketchbook. Next, they will do a charcoal underdrawing on pastel paper, and then move into the color. Discussions will unfold naturally as Ellen discovers and addresses each student's strengths, thoughts, needs, and goals.
